When we came up with the idea to create an awards show for Character Actors, the name Art Carney was the obvious choice... getting him on board was another story.
We sent a proposal to his home in Connecticut, and it came back with 'Rejected' stamped on the envelope. Ready to resign ourselves to the fact that this idea wasn't going to work out, it was by pure coincidence that Art's son Brian just so happened to be a client at the agency where David worked. They got to know each and when the time was right, Brian was introduced to the concept. He liked it so much that he drove up to see his father that weekend to show him the proposal. Art looked it at and asked, "do I have to do anything?" Brian assured him that it wouldn't take up any of his time. Art replied, "I'm honored, make the deal." And just like that, The Carney Awards were born. But he did say that these awards had to be of a very high standard because these actors deserve that kind of recognition.
Over the years, we put together a Board of Directors consisting of actors, writers, directors, producers and studio heads that reads like a Who's Who of Hollywood.
The first Academy Awards ceremony was held in 1929, the first Emmy Awards show was held in 1949 and the very 1st Annual Carney Awards Character Actor Hall of Fame Ceremony was held on November 1, 2015. - jim katz -david katz -brian carney
